New Chef Openings
Sanctuary Kitchen provides opportunities for refugees, asylees and immigrants resettled in Greater New Haven to earn money through cooking events. These events include teaching cooking classes and preparing food for community dinners and special events. With the help of interpreters, chefs have a chance to share their culture and talents with guests to help build connections and increase understanding in our community.
Last year, chefs from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Mexico and the Democratic Republic of Congo participated in Sanctuary Kitchen. For Hands-on Cooking Classes, chefs taught 12-15 guests how to prepare traditional dishes. At Supper Clubs, chefs prepared dinner for 15-20 guests hosted by community members. During both kinds of events, guests, cooks and interpreters sat together to share food and conversation.
The time commitment is flexible; we give turns to participating chefs based on his/her availability, the events scheduled and cuisine requested. Proceeds from events go to supporting chefs and our programs.
